The U.S. Department of Justice has decided to close its investigation of Dallas-based Southwest Airlines’ acquisition of AirTran.

The DOJ’s Antitrust Division has determined that the merger is not likely to substantially lessen competition. There are some overlaps on certain nonstop routes, but the division believes that the acquisition would ultimately benefit the consumer.

Orlando-based AirTran serves 69 cities in the U.S., Mexico, and the Caribbean.
