Democratic gubernatorial candidate Lupe Valdez owes more than $12,000 in overdue property taxes, according to a report by The Houston Chronicle.

Valdez’s campaign appears to have confirmed the fact that Valdez is paying the amount owed in installments and that the full amount isn’t due until January of 2019.

The campaign has blamed the issue on “unpredictable and burdensome” property taxes as well as a lack of leadership on the issue by Republican Governor Greg Abbott.

The Houston Chronicle reports that Valdez is making payments in the amount of $100 to $500 a month toward the overdue property taxes that cover several properties she owns.

Valdez, a former Dallas County sheriff, won a primary runoff on Tuesday, May 22, against Andrew White, but faces an uphill battle against sitting Governor Greg Abbott, as Texas hasn’t elected a Democratic governor since 1990.
