The Cowboys played their first game of the pre-season in San Diego Thursday, August 13, losing 17-7 to the Chargers at Qualcomm Stadium. With Tony Romo, Dez Bryant,  Joseph Randle, Darren McFadden and a slew of other starters notable inactives, the 'boys struggled mightily to engineer offense.

However, last night wasn't completely without bright spots. Here are a few that stood out:

  • Undrafted free agent running back out of Stephen F. Austin, Gus Johnson, scored the Cowboys' lone touchdown on a five yard scamper in the first quarter, finishing the game with 35 yards on 13 carries.
  • This year's second round steal of a draft pick, defensive end Randy Gregory showed some upside for a team that desperately needs a pass rush, recording a sack in his first game in a Cowboys uniform.
  • Third string quarterback Dustin Vaughn completed 67% of his passes (12-18) for 106 yards, including a 21 yard toss to Devin Street on a 3rd and 17 that led to the only Cowboys touchdown.

Overall, the Cowboys performance left a lot to be desired, but it was pre-season game one. What more could one expect? This young team has a world of talent, and will only continue to improve as they begin to mesh and grow within Coach Garrett's system.

We all remember last year's mantra, and with game one of the 2015 pre-season in the books its safe to say the bell has rung.

Time to finish the fight.
