Clovis, New Mexico isn't a bad place. The Taco Box in the mall brings me giggles and joy. But after the Daily Mail UK reported on the unusual relationship between a Clovis couple, many residents are wincing at the worldwide publicity.

According to Daily Mail:

Monica Mares, 36, and her son Caleb Peterson, 19, face up to 18 months in prison if found guilty of incest at a trial later this year in New Mexico. But the mother and son couple have vowed to fight for their right to have a sexual relationship and are appealing to the public to donate to their legal fund.

Apparently, Mares never knew her child Caleb until he was an adult, as he was adopted shortly after his birth. But when the couple met, it was as parent/child and she admits their love was that of a parent/child until it morphed into romantic territory.

Incest is illegal in New Mexico, as it is in all 49 other states and in many parts of the world. And, as most of us are aware, in-breeding between close relatives can lead to offspring with serious genetic maladies. Also, sorry to "shame" or be "judge-y", but this feels predatory to me; even though Caleb is legally an adult, I can't help but feel like he was abused in this situation.

Monica Mares faces thousands in fines and up to 18 months of prison time. She even claims that there is a "hit" out on her -- that is, a call to have her murdered while she is in prison.

The couple is seeking help with their legal fees. It took a little more Googling than usual for me to find their GoFundMe, which, as of this publication, has a whopping $100 donated from one donor. It doesn't specify much, as I suspect the details would violate GoFundMe's terms of service.
