HOUSTON (AP) — Harris County prosecutors have dropped a murder charge against a 28-year-old Houston-area man who authorities have said is a suspect in the shooting and wounding of a state judge in Austin.

The decision Friday still leaves Chimene Hamilton Onyeri with a probation violation charge in Austin and a racketeering charge in Louisiana.

Onyeri's attorney says the Houston murder was dismissed because prosecutors had a Monday deadline to provide him with evidence in the Houston slaying at an apartment complex. Prosecutors say evidence of that case will be included into the Louisiana case where conviction could get him 50 years in prison with hard labor.

Attorney Sam Adamo says Onyeri denies shooting Judge Julie Kocurek last November outside her Austin home. He had a criminal case pending before her court.
