Davis Travels for Cash

As the Dallas Morning News points out, Wendy Davis is in search of campaign cash which means she must leave the State of Texas.

Wendy Davis clearly has attracted some star power this year in her campaign for governor – drawing big names as supporters. Among them, Texas greats Willie Nelson and actress Connie Britton of Friday Night Lights fame, who showcased fundraisers for her. Next week, Davis will be with some of Hollywood’s biggest power players . Among them, director J.J. Abrams, producer Jeffrey Katzenberg and director Steven Spielberg – who are hosting a money-raiser for Davis in Santa Monica. The event will be at a production company owned by Abrams, Bad Robot.

A donation will set you back $1,000 at the door. Co-hosts status costs $10,000. To be called a host, it’s $25,000. The money will be used by the Democrat’s gubernatorial campaign and the pro-Davis ally group Battleground Texas, which wants to make Texas a competitive state again after nearly two decades of GOP domination.

Davis’s Republican opponent, Attorney General Greg Abbott, has tried his own type of star power: inviting rocker and gun enthusiast Ted Nugent to join him on the campaign trail. But Abbott has distanced himself from Nugent after published reports about Nugent’s involvement with underage girls – something the rock musician touted in his tribute song to underage sex, Jailbait.

Davis, whose filibuster against abortion regulations went viral last year and made her a national figure in Democratic circles, has been wooed by supporters on both coasts. On Wednesday night, she attended a fundraiser at the home of wealthy Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer.

Time and time again Davis must leave Texas in order to raise money. Her support in Texas is small and her support from outside Democrats is quickly going away. She better get the outside money while she still can.

By the way, today is Wendy Davis' birthday. Battleground Texas has been making a big deal out of this all week long. While she celebrates her birthday I wonder if she will think about all those who wouldn't have birthdays if her filibuster had worked. Just a thought.

Cornyn Wants Answers

Senator John Cornyn wants answers and issued what the Daily Caller called "scathing questions" to Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson. The questions are in response to reports that over 36,000 illegal immigrants were released by ICE in 2013.

“Unfortunately, your Department’s release of more than 36,000 criminal aliens in FY 2013 has done great damage to [the laws passed by Congress],” wrote Cornyn to Johnson on Wednesday, in a letter obtained by The Daily Caller.

On Monday, the Center for Immigration Studies reported on documents obtained from DHS which showed that ICE released 36,007 criminal aliens last year. In total, they had committed nearly 88,000 crimes, including 193 homicides, 426 sexual assaults, 1,317 domestic violence assaults, and 16,070 drunk or drugged driving incidents.

“Because aliens who have committed serious crimes face a high probability of deportation at the conclusion of their removal proceedings,” wrote Cornyn in the letter, ”the detention of criminal aliens also ensures that these individuals are unable to abscond and further avoid immigration enforcement by disappearing in the United States.”

Cornyn pointed out that DHS is authoritized by the Immigration and Nationality Act to “detain criminal aliens during their removal proceedings when they have been previously convicted of offenses involving moral turpitude, aggravated felonies, controlled substances offenses, firearm offenses, and other dangerous crimes.”

Cornyn laid out twelve questions for Johnson covering various concerns, including on how the on-going release of criminal aliens has effected the state of Texas and also whether the victims of aliens’ crimes are notified of their release.

“Will your department commit to providing Congress with quarterly reports on the number of criminal aliens released from DHS custody pending the outcome of their removal proceedings?” Cornyn wrote.

The Texas senator also sought information on the number of alien convicts released into Texas and whether or not DHS had given Texas authorities notice of criminal aliens it had released.

Sadly, we probably won't get many answers. Remember, no one is ever at fault or does anything wrong in this administration. President Obama doesn't care that these people were released. Democrats don't care either. When it comes to upholding the laws of the United States we already know how the Obama administration feels.
