Campus Carry Could Cost Millions

The Houston Chronicle over the weekend reported that many Texas colleges would have to spend millions if campus carry passes during the legislative session. According to the Chronicle, Texas Tech would have to shell out $7 million if campus carry passes. The University of Texas and University of Houston combined would have to make $47 million in changes.

The UH System's cost estimate notes the need to "create, maintain, and staff secured weapons storage facilities in nine dormitories," as well as hire additional security personnel "to man the facilities 24 hours per day 7 days per week." The total cost would be $3 million in the first year and $1.2 million annually after that. For the UT System, campuses would need to shell out money "for police to educate the campus community about this law and to remind concealed carry licenses owners how important it is to remain in compliance with gun laws at all times."

The bill says current law barring guns from hospitals would be continued and that public institutions can establish their own rules for on-campus firearm storage. But worries have mounted this year the legislation will pass without a provision to allow campuses to totally opt out of these mandates.

Give me a break. Sounds like to me this is just another way for some colleges to complain and possibly increase student fees and tuition. They can blame the state for passing a common sense law and just claim it will cost the school millions of dollars.

Ted Cruz in for a Big Week

Senator Ted Cruz should be making headlines throughout the week according to McClatchyDC.

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, is likely to draw the national spotlight next week with a legislative trifecta: a funding fight over the Department of Homeland Security, a vote for a new attorney general and a review on the future of NASA.

At the same time, Cruz will be hoping to make a splash among the Republican hard core for his possible 2016 presidential run by speaking and mingling Thursday at CPAC, the meeting of the Conservative Political Action Conference.

Cruz, a neophyte politician elected in 2012, became a household name with his 21-hour floor speech leading up to 2013’s partial government shutdown. He seems poised to reprise his role as a shutdown cheerleader, supporting Republicans in the House of Representatives who have tied homeland security funding to rollbacks of President Barack Obama’s executive actions on immigration.

Each of the things mentioned in the article could have a positive impact for Cruz and his 2016 aspirations. This week alone, Cruz will be able to bash liberals and the administration, lay out a path forward for the country and lay out a path forward for the world when it comes to space exploration. Not bad.
