Joe Biden is Out

Vice President Joe Biden will not be running for President. According to POLITICO, Biden told reporters yesterday that his window has closed.

Vice President Joe Biden will not pursue the Democratic nomination for president in 2016, he said on Wednesday, turning down a chance to throw his hat into the ring for the third time after a months-long deliberation process that kept his party guessing.

"I've said all along what I've said time and again to others: that it may very well be that [the grieving] process, by the time we get through it, closes the window on mounting a realistic campaign for president: that it might close," Biden said just after noon on Wednesday, referring to the May death of his son, Beau, of brain cancer. "I’ve concluded that it has closed."

"Beau is our inspiration," he added, speaking in the Rose Garden, flanked by President Barack Obama and his wife Jill. "Unfortunately, I believe we're out of time. The time necessary to mount a winning campaign for the nomination. But while I will not be a candidate, I will not be silent. I intend to speak out clearly and forcefully."

Trailing former secretary of state Hillary Clinton — the strong front-runner — and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders — the insurgent progressive challenger — Biden opted not to fight what would have been an uphill battle.

Biden also told reporters that he would have liked to be the President who ended cancer and that he will spend the next 15 months pursuing that cure.

Biden signaled no intention to back Clinton or any of her opponents, instead promising to play a role in the 2016 debate. On top of declaring the importance of finding a cure for cancer, Biden said he would use the remainder of his time as vice president to influence the national discussion.

"We intend to spend the next 15 months fighting for what we’ve always cared about, what my family’s always cared about, with every ounce of our being," he said.

"I am absolutely certain we are capable of accomplishing extraordinary things. And when we do, America won’t just win the future. We will own the finish line."

Hillary Clinton has got to be thrilled about Biden's decision. The nomination is now hers unless she has an epic collapse.
