It's Time For People to Stop Believing That Donald Trump Is The Answer

It was another weekend where Donald Trump dominated the news cycle in America. His comments Friday about FOX News' Megyn Kelly led Erick Erickson to rescind his invitation to have Trump speak at Red State Gathering. It was the right move by Erickson, but one that prompted some Republicans to lash out him and others who are tired of the Donald Trump circus.

While I have applauded Donald Trump for making Illegal Immigration a central issue in the Republican Primary, the fact remains that Trump has contributed far more division the the primary than good ideas. Republicans should be celebrating the diversity and ideas of the candidates running for the Republican nomination. Republicans should be proud that Senator Marco Rubio is making a stand for life while being attacked by CNN and other liberal publications. Republicans should be celebrating a candidate like Senator Ted Cruz who has no problem calling out weak Republicans who he sees as part of the problem in Washington. Republicans should be impressed that Dr. Ben Carson, a brilliant surgeon, has continued to show strength in the polls as his message connects with voters. Republicans all over should be talking about Carly Fiorina. A former CEO who has turned heads and left liberal pundit Chris Matthews speechless. Republicans should be having a debate on whether Rand Paul is correct when it comes to government spying or if Chris Christie is correct when he says the government needs more tools to catch terrorists. Republicans should be debating how Rick Perry's resume while Governor of Texas compares to that of Scott Walker's resume in Wisconsin. These are the stories that Republican voters should be talking about. That the news media should be talking about.

Instead, we are left talking about Donald Trump and his dumbass comments.

I have and continue to understand the appeal of Donald Trump's no-nonsense attitude. I understand why it appeals to those who are tired of Washington. There are better candidates though and better ideas. While I hate political correctness, I still hold the Presidency in high-esteem. When seeking the highest office in the land, it is important to be a fighter and to be truthful, but it's also important to raise the level of thought and debate in this country. Calling people losers and idiots might have been okay when running for student council, but not when running for President of the United States.

We need a fighter who is willing to take on the big issues. We need someone who is willing to call out members of their own party when they go astray. We need a President that can really bring this country back. And yes, we need a President that people will respect. Nothing Donald Trump has done tells me that he can be that person.

It is also my opinion that we need the next President to be someone who will fight and push for conservative solutions. Republican voters complain that Jeb Bush, John McCain, and Mitt Romney were RINO's that weren't much different than Democrats. However, many of those same Republicans have sadly embraced the biggest RINO in the primary, Donald Trump.

In August of 2015 it is easy for people to get swept up in the entertainment part of politics. We are still many months away from votes being cast, but we have real problems in this country that we need to get serious about. While Donald Trump might be fun to talk about with friends, he is just a distraction. A distraction from other real issues that better candidates are talking about.

This doesn't mean that I will ban Donald Trump topics on the show. It also doesn't mean that I don't recognize that Donald Trump is a threat to run as a third party candidate. I still believe that Trump is closer to the Clinton campaign in many ways. While he could run as a third party candidate, that doesn't mean we should respect everything he says just because we are scared of what he may do in the future.

Republicans have a number of candidates who they can look to as fighters. A numbers of candidates with great ideas and solutions to fix a country that many of us see as broken. We also have candidates that we can believe hold the answers to so many questions that we can proudly rally around. Donald Trump may have a good idea from time to time and he may be able to channel the anger that many Americans have. But he is not the answer Republicans are really looking for.
