Republican Debate Set for Thursday

Rick Perry has been preparing for years for his chance at redemption in a prime-time debate. He will have to wait a bit longer for that chance. FOX News announced yesterday who made the cut for the prime-time debate on Thursday and who will be relegated to the so-called "kids table" debate earlier in the day.

Real estate magnate Donald Trump; former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush; Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker; retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson; former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee; Texas Sen. Ted Cruz; Florida Sen. Marco Rubio; Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul; New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie; and Ohio Gov. John Kasich.

The roster of 10 candidates was determined based on an average of the five most recent national polls. Trump as expected made the cut, as did Bush and Walker, who have each posted strong numbers in recent surveys.

The drama, rather, was at the edge of the top 10. Christie and Kasich, who were hovering by that edge in recent polling, were able to qualify.

But former Texas Gov. Rick Perry and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, among others, will not be on the prime-time, 9 p.m. ET stage. The seven who did not make the top 10 will be invited to a separate 5 p.m. ET debate.

Some quick thoughts on the debate standings.

First, If you're Ben Carson you have to be thrilled that you are in the top 5. There has been no media hype around Carson but he has consistently been in the top 5 of candidates. It's very impressive.

Second, what is happening with Senator Marco Rubio? He is in 7th place and seems to be slipping. I think that this is a minor blip for him and that he will eventually rise in the polls. He is smart and talented and someone who is considered the future for the GOP.

Third, who are the people supporting Mike Huckabee and what are they thinking? I can understand the backing Trump is getting. Voters are angry and want a candidate that is in your face. I don't understand why people keep blindly following Huckabee. Is it only because he hates gay marriage? There are much better candidates who are real conservatives that are anti-gay marriage.

Finally, it's a shame that Mike Huckabee and Chris Christie are in the prime-time debate but Rick Perry and Carly Fiorina are not. It makes absolutely no sense and the prime-time audience will miss out on two candidates that should be heard from. Perry being knocked out of the prime-time debate won't kill his campaign, but it does hurt.
