The Lubbock City Council Thursday evening named City Attorney Chad Weaver interim city manager, effective November 18, 2016. The vote was unanimous 7-0.

The current city manager, James Loomis, will be retiring from the City of Lubbock on November 18, 2016.

Lubbock City Council representatives Steve Massengale and Karen Gibson cited Weaver's excellent work as city attorney as the reason why the council selected him to lead the city after Loomis' retirement. Mayor Dan Pope added that Weaver will be paid the city manager's salary while serving as the interim and will move back to the city attorney's position, and salary, when the new city manager starts their duties.

“We have confidence in Mr. Weaver’s ability to do this job,” Mayor Dan Pope said. “When you look at his service now and in the past, we believe he will provide strong leadership during this transition period.”

Weaver has been with the City of Lubbock since 2007, first serving as an Assistant City Attorney. He was named City Attorney in May of 2014.

“I’m grateful for the confidence that the City Council has shown in me, and I am proud to serve along with an excellent team of my fellow City employees who provide services to our citizens each day,” Weaver said. “We look forward to welcoming a new city manager to Lubbock soon.”

This week, the Lubbock City Council is holding interviews with four finalists for city manager and a sole finalist could be named at some point in November.
