The Car Coach Lauren Fix joined Lubbock's First News Friday (August 7) to discuss how to pick out a safe vehicle.

When it comes to new drivers, some parents think if you get him or her a big old truck with power then their new driver will be safe. But this isn't the case at all, Fix said.

"You really want to look for vehicles that are mid-size, that have moderate power, good fuel efficiency and the key thing is safety rating," said Fix. "I think people forget about that."

The fatality rate is three times higher with drivers ages 16 to 19, she pointed out.

Lauren says parents should "never skip on safety" when shopping for a vehicle for their new driver.
