It’s been one heck of a journey for Richard Linklater and his movie ‘Boyhood.’ Shooting on the film began over a dozen years ago; each and every year since, he and his cast and crew would reunited to add a new chapter to the story of Mason (Ellar Coltrane) and his family. Imagine the kind of dedication and commitment that sort of project takes. I had a hard time focusing for the 30 straight minutes it took to write this blog post.

Recognizing Linklater’s incredible achievement, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association gave ‘Boyhood’ its highest honor tonight, the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture of the Year (Drama). Linklater’s film topped some heavy competition, but may have benefitted from being the only nominee this year that wasn’t based on a true story; all four of the other contenders (‘Selma,’ ‘Foxcatcher,’ ‘The Imitation Game,’ and ‘The Theory of Everything’) were biopics. One could argue ‘Boyhood’ was a kind of biography, too, but Linklater’s unconventional approach to the genre and his amazing cast of actors put it in a class by itself. Will that be enough to win the Oscar for Best Picture, though? That we won’t find out until February 22.
