A Big Spring resident pleaded guilty to one count of “attempted receipt of a visual depiction of a minor engaging in sexually explicit conduct” in Lubbock Federal Court.

According to documents filed Wednesday (June 24), Gilberto Ray Hinojos, 22, admitted to responding to and requesting sexually explicit pictures in a sting operation carried out by the Texas Department of Public Safety.

In May, the DPS created an online ad posing as a 13-year-old girl named Shelly. It was through this ad that Hinojos incriminated himself by requesting pictures and agreeing to a meeting on the 5700 block of 19th Street, where Hinojos was detained by police.

Hinojos posted bond and was released from the Lubbock County Detention Center. He still faces 5-20 years in prison on state charges for the same crime.
