Back to school is upon us. We've done the shopping for new clothes and school supplies, but have we remembered to get our children their immunizations?

We talked with Crockett Tidwell, RPH, CDE, a clinical pharmacist with the United  Supermarket families, and he told us that the pharmacies at United, Market Street, Amigos and Alberstons stores are offering vaccines for children.

Finding the right vaccine

Tidwell said that it's as simple as finding out what immunizations your child needs for this year, according to their age, from the school nurse. Then, take it to your United pharmacist and they will take care of you.

"We can do any back to school vaccine at the pharmacy," Tidwell told us. "Our pharmacists are able to provide any vaccine available in the United States."

Tidwell also said that according to Texas law, children under the age of 14 require a prescription to get a vaccine in a pharmacy. He noted this is "not a big deal," and that a doctor can provide such a prescription.

College Vaccinations

What about teenagers? Do college-age students need immunizations? Tidwell says yes, especially for meningitis. Texas colleges and universities require students to receive a meningitis vaccine.

Preparing for flu season

With fall right around the corner, we asked Tidwell what flu vaccines do we need this year? He said that there are some new flu vaccines on the market this year and that the company has "a flu vaccine to cover everyone."

There's a vaccine that will cover four strains of flu, providing broader protection. It will also be the primary vaccine this fall and winter. Tidwell said they also have a vaccine that is egg-free, which is great news for people with egg allergies.

And if you're 65 or older, there is a flu vaccine this year that is called Fluzone HD (which stand for high dose). It's specially formulated for people over 65.

So whether it's back to school or protection from seasonal flu viruses, United Supermarket family stores can help you and are glad to do so.
