An Amarillo anesthesiologist has been arrested on federal tax evasion charges.

Edgar A. Lockett, Jr. was arrested Monday, and the U.S. Attorney’s office alleges that Lockett owes more than $1.4 million in unpaid income taxes.

The indictment states that Lockett is a self-employed anesthesiologist in Amarillo, and he also practiced in Mineral Wells and McAllen.

They allege that Lockett has not filed income tax returns since 1999, except for a joint return filed with his spouse for 2007.

The indictment continues, saying that Lockett concealed his assets from the IRS by placing funds and property in the names of nominee companies, and secreting his income in bank accounts under his dead father’s name and social security number.

Lockett has been charged with six counts of tax evasion. Each count carries a maximum penalty of five years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted, along with restitution.
