During Thursday's edition of Lubbock's First News on KFYO, Cal Brints of Apple Country swung by the studio to talk about the local farmer's market.

Most people choose to buy their fruits and vegetables at supermarkets. However, there are some definite advantages to picking up produce from the local farmer's market.

One of the advantages of buying your fruits and veggies from a farmer's market is that you get to talk to the people who grew the produce and figure out exactly what you are eating and how it was grown. Also, pesticides are not as commonly used by local farmers and the produce is fresher and more recently picked. In addition, you are supporting your local farmers.

At the farmer's market at South Quaker and the Loop, there are 9 different kinds of vegetables, including tomatoes, jalapenos, zucchini, potatoes, okra, and 4 different types of apples.

The Farmer's Market will be open today, Friday, and Saturday. Today's market will be open at the Garrison Institute from 11AM-3PM. Friday's market will be open at the Health Sciences Center on the North side of Tech campus open from 11AM-3PM. Saturday's market will be held from 9AM-1PM at Buddy Holly and 19th.

Most of the produce comes from Brint's farm, but there are also 8 other farmers involved. "Backyard gardeners, any other farmers, if you've got something extra, bring it to the farmer's market and turn it into cash, as we say. If you don't want to sell it, we, and other farmers will sell it for you. We want more people producing fresh fruits and vegetables," Brints Said.
