Three athletes have received a notable honor from Texas Tech.

Texas Tech men’s basketball player Jaye Crockett, softball player Taylor Powell, and soccer player Haley Haagsma have been named as Student Athletes of the Year.

The awards were given as part of the 2014 TECHSPYS, held on Monday, May 5th at the Allen Theater.

Cross Country runner Kennedy Kithuka and soccer’s Jaelene Hinkle were named as the male and female athletes of the year for their athletic contribution.

A total of 225 student-athletes received awards based on their academic standing, while 16 other awards covered athletic achievement and community involvement.

“Our student athletes are winners in every sense of the word,” said Felicia Martin, associate athletic director of academics. “They succeed in the classroom, they achieve on the playing field, and they are accomplished in the community.”

The TECHSPY for Men’s Team of the Year went to Red Raider Football for their 8-5 season and Holiday Bowl win. The TECHSPY for Female Team of the Year went to Red Raider Soccer, in honor of their best season in school history, which included a second-round game in the NCAA tournament.
